After that battle, there was a break to dry up the stage.

The city was here to show off their special environment. Transforming it like that was allowed in the rules, but they weren’t going to make the other contestants fight on it.

As the fights went on, we saw more interesting eldrin we didn’t know anything about.

One team had a chaneque, a strange creature with a young childlike body but the face of an elderly man. The creature didn’t walk normally—it only hopped and jumped, which I thought would surely spell its doom in the ring. However, its trickery and plant magic let it throw its opponent into a hole.

Another team had a jorogumo, a monstrous creature with the upper body of a beautiful woman. However, its body was that of a spindly spider and it fought viciously. To my surprise, it had a flame evocation. Empowered by the sweltering sun, it blasted its opponent into unconsciousness.

Finally, though, it was our turn to fight.

“Next up!” Marv called. “Wren’s Winning Team versus The Geniuses!”

“Wren,” I said. “Light the sword.”

He let out a gout of flame and my blade was soon covered with blazing flame, drawing an “ooh” from the crowd.

Sage and I glanced at each other and nodded, then walked onto the stage.

“The Geniuses…” I muttered, turning to Wren and Roux. “I remember them from the banquet. Their eldrin were just weird.”

“Yeah, don’t forget about that monkey,” Sage said. “The satori can read your mind. You’ll have to try and trick it!”

“Yeah… Maybe the signs aura will help with that…” I said, turning to Roux. She nodded, briefly bowing her head.

“Partner, we will do our best to win.”

We got onto the stage first.

As for the Geniuses, they took a bit of time picking out their members. Not only that, it seemed like they were fiddling with their magical items.

Marv and Amara floated in the air uncertainly. They didn’t know if they should rush them or not.

“Just a bit longer!” a pretty-looking lady with gold glasses said. “We’re just deciding the final pieces.”

Moments later, she hopped onto the other side of the stage. A very scholarly-looking man from the Geniuses joined her.

“In this corner!” Marv cried, gesticulating wildly. “We have Sage Unna, the rough and tumble girl from Zarimoria. And her eldrin, the tanuki—Kenji!”

“Rough and tumble?” Sage said.

“Just go along with it I guess!” I laughed, shrugging.

The announcer continued. “And next we have a young gentleman who caused quite the stir. Martial arts prodigy Amir Rosewood and his two—that’s right, two, eldrin! He has Roux the kirin and Wren the syrocko drake!”

“Okay, of course you like his titles. Martial arts prodigy sounds way more amazing than rough and tumble girl!”

I didn’t even have a comeback. Sage was simply correct there.

The crowd cheered for us, but that was it.

I remembered that in the regional round, Roux had caused a massive stir. By now, everyone knew about kirin and how they let their arcanists bond with two eldrin.

In fact, most of the crowd’s surprised muttering was about Master Elias.
